As the developed world struggles to become more “green” so do certain investors. In fact there is a movement that is promoting [tag]socially responsible investing[/tag] (you can read more on Wikipedia here) when choosing which companies to invest in.
Some companies are unfortunately taking advantage of this although we’re still being encouraged not to give up on [tag]ethical investing[/tag]. For more on this it is worth reading the “Don’t Give Up On Ethical Investing” article that can be found at TheTyee.ca.
The [tag]Google Foundation[/tag] held a conference on [tag]social impact investing[/tag] on March 20, 2006 and has released videos showing for some of the presentations that are worth watching, especially if you’re interested in socially responsible investing.

Social Impact Investing – Maria Ortero
[tag]Maria Otero[/tag] is president and CEO of [tag]ACCION International[/tag], a leading global microfinance institution that seeks to open the financial systems in developing countries to reach the poor. ACCION provides technical assistance, equity investment and financial services to 27 of the most advanced microfinance institutions in the world, which ACCION helped start and/or grow. Most of these microfinance institutions are regulated, are members of the ACCION Network, and together reached 1.9 million borrowers at the end of 2005, with an active loan portfolio that exceeded $1 billion. Ms. Otero first joined ACCION in 1986 as director of its lending program in Honduras, where she lived for three years.
